The Power of the Mind

The power of the human mind was beautifully illustrated in a story told from stage by George Zaleski, where he demonstrated its ability to deceive us.

He asked the audience to come to the stage and imagine a huge plank going across, perhaps a foot wide and 30 foot long that they will each walk across. They agreed they felt safe as there was no imminent threat to survival or security by doing this exercise.

As people walked, some moved quickly, others more slowly, some probably thought it was ridiculous, others may have been confused. Some spoke to people behind or in front of them, many wondered what they could learn about their mind from this exercise. But the plank is on the ground, and participants felt confident and relaxed as they walked this plank. It was no big deal. Everyone agreed they could walk the plank without concern.

Then he said that he was going to put a concern of security, and survival into their minds, by having the audience imagine that same plank 1,000 feet in the air suspended between two buildings. When he asked how many would walk this same plank, only a few people agreed. The difference now was that in their minds they perceived a threat to their safety.

Next, he challenged the audience to imagine this same plank bolted to the stage, and they had to tiptoe across the plank, one at a time, without touching their heels to the plank or touching the stage floor. And each time they succeeded, they would receive a $100 bill. And they believed this was easy and they were being rewarded as well. How cool was that? The mind loves rewards for easy tasks.

Then he said that there are no rules and for every time they cross the plank in 10 minutes, they will receive $500. Holy moly, easy money! They loved that! So, the fitter, younger, more athletic people pushed ahead of the older more frail folks, wanting to win lots of free money. Fairness and consideration were out the window.

Everyone went back to their seats, some people were bragging that they won $3,000, another else said they only made $1,000. Yet another complained they only got $500. They had nothing before, now they have $500, but they had an issue about that too!

Then he said he wanted to show the audience something. He said that plank was never on the floor as everyone perceived it to be. He whisked away crepe paper that was patterned exactly like the stage floor and revealed beneath the plank a 1,000 foot drop. He remarked how easily everyone had walked that plank, not knowing about the drop below, yet they were paralyzed at the thought of walking a plank 1,000 feet up in the air between 2 buildings just moments before.

So, what really stopped them? Their perception and belief about something that wasn't real. But they acted as though it were real.

That is the power of the mind!

How to Change Your Life

When you learn something new, the neurons in your brain fire and wire together, creating new connections. So, the process of learning creates new neural pathways, repetition develops habits and sustaining them is memory.

There was a study done with athletes, who imagined themselves running an event. Their brainwaves showed that the exact same parts of the brain that fired during their imagining the event, were the same as the parts of the brain that fired when they physically ran the event. This study proved that focused thinking about the thing you desire, actually develops new pathways in your brain. Your thoughts have the potential to rewire your brain even if you can't physically experience it in the present. Just the act of imagining your future and what you want it to look like, can actually change your brain and attracted to you what you want to create. This is the premise of the Law of Attraction.

However, most people don’t take the time to develop the skill of how to change their thoughts and develop new neural pathways. You have to unlearn before you relearn by breaking the habits of the old you in order to invent a new you. And using visualization, it’s not enough to just do it once; you have to train your mind by doing this over and over again to get results. Repetition is what allows the learning to become remembered and then habitual.

And that’s why hypnotherapy is so powerful. Through hypnosis you are able to close your eyes, disconnect from your outer environment, access your subconscious mind and uncover the events and beliefs you created that kept you stuck in the past. Then you are able to free yourself from the chains of those disempowering beliefs, thoughts and emotions and transform them by wiring in new empowering thoughts, beliefs and emotions of a future that is inspiring and joyful to you.

As these changes happen, you will become aware any time your old thoughts and beliefs start creeping in, so you can consciously recognize and change the behaviors and emotions all of your old self. You will be less emotionally reactive, more cognizant what is driving your thoughts so if you unconsciously fall back into a habit you can shift. This is what starts the process of change. To cement these changes, you will receive a personal audio recording to listen to daily for at least 21 days, longer if you choose.

This is when you will be able to realize and experience all those positive emotions you have been desiring, so you can create a life that is fulfilled and joyful.

Learn to Love Yourself

‘She sat at the back and they said she was shy,

She led from the front and they hated her pride,

They asked her advice and then questioned her guidance,

They branded her loud, then were shocked by her silence.

When she shared no ambition they said it was sad,

So she told them her dreams and they said she was mad.

They told her they'd listen, then covered their ears,

And gave her a hug while they laughed at her fears.

And she listened to all of it thinking she should

Be the girl they told her to be best as she could,

But one day she asked what was best for herself,

Instead of trying to please everyone else,

So she walked to the forest and stood with the trees,

She heard the wind whisper and dance with the leaves.

She spoke to the willow, the elm and the pine,

And she told them what she'd been told time after time,

She told them she felt she was never enough,

She was either too little or far far too much.

Too loud or too quiet, too fierce or too weak,

Too wise or too foolish, too bold or too meek

Then she found a small clearing surrounded by firs,

And she stopped...and she heard what the trees said to her,

And she sat there for hours not wanting to leave,

For the forest said nothing, it just let her breathe.'
