Stress is usually experienced short-term, in the moment, when a stressful event is occurring. It is completely natural to feel stressed when you are in danger or experiencing an unpleasant situation. It creates a short-term physical response in your body that subsides after the stressful experience has passed.


On the other hand, Anxiety is prolonged worrying - about the future, about things that may or not happen and imagining possible scenarios and outcomes of situations that you perceive as real. It is more a sustained form of stress, that creates prolonged physical and psychological changes in your body. This constant worrying and fear of unknown circumstances beyond your control, may interfere with your daily activities and your life in general.


Anxiety may also cause other unpleasant side effects such as a racing heart, sweating, tension, obsessive thoughts, panic attacks, and compulsive or avoidant behaviors. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it may be an indication of anxiety.


What you may not be aware of is that your anxiety may be caused from a deeply seated response you had to an event you perceived as threatening, usually during your childhood. Your automatic response to perceived threats continues to affect you today, as you attempt to avoid situations you instinctively interpret as similarly harmful, disruptive or destructive. This automatic response may cause you to experience unnecessary fear, anxiety, or panic.
